Stumbled across your blog post while looking for thoughts on paper charts vs. all of the new technological findings. Being the owner of an iPhone, I am all about the latest gadgets, but I can tend to be a smidge old fashioned when it comes to charts… for an alternative to having to unfold a giant sectional, I would definitely say you should check out http://www.skysectionals.com/. Basically they have taken the same information you would get from the FAA/NACO sectionals and turned them into easily accessible sectionals that fit perfectly on your kneeboard. The website is a cinch to navigate, and I was able to look at a sample before making up my mind to try them out. I have really enjoyed using them, and it’s great because once I downloaded the sectional I could print off as many as I needed, and I could print just the ones that I needed for my trip.

@Todd - Definitely!

@Harry, I've been slightly lazy, but I have an actual GPS track (two of them actually) of the route we flew that I'm planning to post as a Google Earth map. But thanks for the link!

Nice video. "Take Five" is one of my faves. If you'd like, here's a route map you can embed into your posts. http://jetrecord.com/routes/kpwk+kjvl

The embed code is at the bottom and you can adjust the dimensions if you want.

Hey Peter,

Glad you had a good time. Just wanted to say hey, and let you know I've been following your blog a little, and I'm an instructor down in Terre Haute, IN. You're right about pilotage. You still have to plan it all out the old fashion way if you want to do things right. I posted on my new blog about that <a href="http://flighttrainingtips.blogspot.com/2008/11/cross-country-flight-planning-checklist.html" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

Good luck in your training.

Hi Brandon. Thanks for checking in and listening!

I have an iRiver IFP-899 MP3 recorder. It has an 1/8" input, and I connect it to one of the 1/4" headphone jacks in the back seat to capture the audio using a regular cable with 1/4" at one end and 1/8" at the other. Basically I just set it to record the audio and forget about it. The trickiest part is getting the level setting right (I use a setting of about 24 I think), but once you have it set, it's simple to get all the audio.

Hey Peter,

I've just been checking out your blog. Good luck on your flight training, I'm sure you'll do well. By the way, how did you record that audio from the cockpit. I thought that was pretty awesome. I'm interested in being able to do that.

Hey Peter - Glad you got another lesson in. I have to say I learned under Part 61 guidelines where I did not follow a set curriculum and also handled ground training on my own and I think that worked out well for me. You just need to be a disciplined self learner. If you are I think that route along with some periodic ground training with your CFI is a good way to go.

I also trained in Cessna 152s and saved a ton by doing that over a more expensive plan (Does WCF have any 152s?). I think you are doing the right thing to check out one more location before committing.

I have the Sporty's DVDs and still years after earning my license still refer to them from time to time. But, if you want to borrow the DVDs to check out the style let me know.

I have also enjoyed a few of their ipod friendly videos as well. But, in fairness I have never tried any of the King videos.

Peter - I am excited to hear you are going to podcast your experiences. I too have thoroughly enjoyed Bill's podcast. I know one of the reasons he stated for doing the podcast was for the same reason you mentioned that it would be a great opportunity to review lessons.

I know from my standpoint I think blogging my experiences helped me with learning. I only wish I had recorded each lesson. Even if I was not going to podcast my lessons it would have been helpful in referring back to them as I am sure there was some insight I might have missed in the heat of a lesson.

I am glad to hear you are going to be recording your lessons.

You are right that if you are training in a Piper or Cessna that is a four place plane you should be able to tap into one of the back seat mics.
